Denise Hughes
Denise is a classically trained lyric soprano with a passion for singing, acting and teaching. Although a former resident of several states, including Alaska and Florida, her home has always been Oklahoma. A double-major in Church Music and Vocal Performance, she received her bachelor's degree from Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, while under the direction of Dr. Judy Marlett. She is presently a Vocal Instructor and has been teaching since 2000 using the "cantare come si parla" method, which focuses on proper vowel placement and control.
Denise has been performing in community theater since 2013. She has performed with Cimmaron Opera Company (Iolanthe), Poteet Theatre (The Sound of Music, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Peter Pan), Reduxion Theatre (The Women and As You Like It), El Reno Community Theatre (Fiddler on the Roof), Jewel Box Theatre (You Can't Take It With You, Heaven Can Wait, To Kill A Mockingbird and Always a Bridesmaid - for which she won the Best Actress Award at the Jewel Box Gem Awards) and 3rd Act Theatre Company (Oxtiern or The Misfortunes of Libertinage and Heartbreak House - for which she won the Best Supporting Actress Award at the Scene Awards) and Kids Alive! (Matilda). Denise is also a member of Everybody Else's Girl, a local cover band as well as a guest singer for Medium Swing.
While teaching voice and theater at Allegro Performing Arts Studio in Edmond, Denise was the co-director of Musical Theater and directed productions of Fiddler on the Roof Jr. and A Midsummer Night's Dream. She has also taught a theater class along with a fellow colleague, TSW Theater Group, and co-directed The Compleat Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [edited] and The Fall of the House of Usher. She has also directed several community theater productions (Wedding Belles and Arsenic and Old Lace at Jewel Box Theatre). To her great delight, some of her students have been in local theater productions including Annie and Oliver! at Jewel Box Theater, Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast and A Territorial Christmas at the Pollard Theater, Oliver! at Lyric Theater, Ragtime at Poteet Theatre and Seussical the Musical at the Family Theater Warehouse. Others have performed at the Oklahoma Opry and arts festivals throughout the metro area. Several of Denise's students are members of the regional honor OMEA and OCDA All-State choirs and consistently receive I's and II's at OSSAA District Solo and Ensemble competitions. Former students of Denise's have gone on to earn degrees in vocal music, musical theatre and opera from accredited colleges and universities.
Denise has been rated as one of the top 10 Voice Teachers for two years with Expertise.com.
